Water Filtration System
Every drop of water used in our drinks goes through the filtration system first. Good water makes good drinks -- filtration removes chlorine, sediment, and off-flavors that would ruin tea and espresso.
How It Works
The filtration system is installed on the main water line that feeds the hot water dispenser and the espresso machine. You do not interact with it during normal service -- it works automatically in the background.
The filter removes:
- Chlorine and chloramine (causes chemical taste)
- Sediment and particulates
- Some minerals that cause scale buildup in equipment
Filter Replacement Schedule
| Task | Frequency | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Check filter status indicator | Monthly | Staff (during monthly equipment check) |
| Replace filter cartridge | Every 3-6 months | Manager or technician |
| Full system inspection | Annually | Technician |
Filter Life Varies
How quickly the filter needs replacement depends on water usage and local water quality. The schedule above is a guideline. The actual replacement trigger is usually one of the signs listed below.
Signs the Filter Needs Replacement
Watch for these during your daily routine and report them to the manager:
| Sign | What You Notice |
|---|---|
| Slow water flow | Hot water dispenser or espresso machine fills noticeably slower than usual |
| Taste change | Water or brewed tea has an off-flavor, chemical taste, or metallic taste |
| Odor | Water smells like chlorine or has any unusual smell |
| Visual indicator | Filter housing has a color-change indicator that shows red or "replace" |
| Scale buildup | White deposits appearing faster than usual on equipment |
Report Immediately
If you notice a taste or smell change in the water, stop making drinks with it and tell the manager right away. Off-tasting water means off-tasting drinks, and customers will notice before we do.
What Staff Need to Do
Your role with the filtration system is simple:
- Monthly check. During the monthly equipment inspection, look at the filter housing. Note whether the indicator shows green (good) or red/yellow (needs replacement). Report to the manager.
- Report problems. If water tastes or smells off, or if flow is noticeably slower, tell the manager.
- Do not attempt to replace the filter yourself unless the manager has specifically trained you and asked you to do it.
Filter Location
The filter housing is typically mounted under the counter or on the wall near the water line connections. It is a cylindrical housing with a clear or opaque shell. The manager can show you exactly where it is during your onboarding.
Why Filtration Matters for Our Drinks
| Drink Type | Why Filtration Matters |
|---|---|
| Tea | Tea is 99% water. Unfiltered water with chlorine completely changes the flavor profile. |
| Espresso | Mineral content affects extraction. Too many minerals = bitter. Too few = flat and sour. |
| Equipment | Unfiltered water causes faster scale buildup, which damages the espresso machine and hot water dispenser. |
Good filtration protects both drink quality and equipment longevity. It is one of those invisible things that makes a huge difference.
